IFIP Technical Committee Chair: Generic Job Description Approved by Technical Assembly February 29th 2004 Adopted by Technical Committee 12 March 14th 2004 APPOINTMENT The Chair of a Technical Committee (TC) shall be appointed by the IFIP President on the recommendation of the TC. The Chair shall serve for a term of three years and may be reappointed for one additional term. The Chair must be a member of the TC. [Bylaw 4.3.3] APPOINTS The TC Chair may designate a Vice-Chair and a Secretary with the approval of the TC. The Vice-Chair must be a member of the TC, shall serve for a term of three years and may be reappointed for one additional term. The term of office for Secretaries is three years, which may be renewed without any limitation. [Bylaw 4.3.4] RESPONSIBILITIES (1) To co-ordinate the activities undertaken by the TC in pursuit of its approved Aims and Scope. (2) To appoint members to the TC as specified in Bylaw 4.3.2. (3) To appoint Chairs of Working Groups on the recommendation of the TC and other members of Working Groups with the approval of the TC. [Bylaw 4.3.7] (4) To make proposals to the Technical Assembly on behalf of the TC for the creation of new Working Groups or the dissolution or redirection of existing ones. (5) To keep the Aims and Scope of the TC under review and where necessary recommend changes to the Technical Assembly and General Assembly. (6) To keep the membership of the TC under review and initiate changes where necessary. (7) To keep the Working Group structure and programme of activities under review and initiate changes where necessary. (8) To convene at least one meeting of the TC each year and where possible attend, chair and present a Chair's report at each such meeting. Where attendance is not possible, the meeting will be chaired by a proxy, normally the Vice-Chair. If necessary, meetings may be 'electronic'. (9) To initiate and facilitate the development of a programme of events for the TC and its Working Groups. (10) To co-ordinate the publication of event proceedings in collaboration with Working Group Chairs and others, as appropriate. (11) To ensure that a register of members of the TC is maintained. (12) To ensure that an up to date website is maintained of information about the TC, its Working Groups and activities. (13) To prepare reports for the Technical Assembly and General Assembly as requested. (14) To serve as an ex officio member of the IFIP Technical Assembly (TA), General Assembly (GA) and Council. Where possible to attend at least one meeting of the TA and GA/Council annually to report on the activities of the TC and discuss future developments. When attendance is not possible, to appoint a proxy. (15) To communicate the policies determined at the IFIP General Assembly and Technical Assembly to TC and Working Group members, as appropriate. (16) To manage the TC budget approved by the General Assembly. (17) To foster collaboration with other TCs and organise joint events where appropriate.
