[pept:176] Pos Research Fellow vacancy at UNU-IIST / Macao

UNU-IIST is seeking a Research Fellow

UNU-IIST, the International Institute for Software Technology, is a Research and Training Centre of the United Nations University. It serves developing countries to help them attain self-reliance in software technology by training their young scientists and engineers.

UNU-IIST has a group of highly diverse, multi-national staff from
various backgrounds and cultures. It offers a pleasant and stimulating
environment at its new premises in Macao, and the opportunity to train
and work with people from many parts of the world, both in Macao and
on trips to developing countries. Scientists currently working at
UNU-IIST include He Jifeng and Chris George. Dines Bjorner (the
founding director) and Zhou Chaochen have also worked here. UNU-IIST
also attracts many long- and short-term academic visitors, so there
are good opportunities for research with the staff and with others.
For more information about UNU-IIST, please visit the UNU-IIST home
page: http://www.iist.unu.edu.

Macao is a Special Administrative Region of China, about 40km from
Hong Kong, the other side of the Pearl River estuary. It is a small,
safe city, predominantly Chinese in culture but with strong Portuguese
influences and an active expatriate community of people from many
countries. There are schools that teach in English, Chinese, and
Portuguese.

UNU-IIST currently has a vacancy for a Research Fellow, for
which applications are invited by 31 March 2004.

The Research Fellow will be involved in research and in training
software engineers, researchers, and academics from developing
countries. Applicants should have the equivalent of a Ph.D. in
computing science or a related subject, and research interests
relating to the development of computer systems using pragmatic
modelling and formal engineering methods, which is where UNU-IIST
currently focuses its academic activities. UNU-IIST is currently
expanding its interests in the areas of electronic government,
distance learning, and environmental modelling, so experience in these
areas would be an advantage, as would industrial experience. The
successful candidate will be appointed for an initial two-year period
with the possibility of extension.

We are willing to appoint someone to this post under a Personal
Service Agreement. This will provide remuneration of up to USD 6000
per month, free of Macao income taxes, but without pension, insurance,
education, or relocation benefits. An exceptional candidate might
receive remuneration above this level.

Appointment is also possible as a United Nations official at the L2/L3
level of the United Nations salary scale, which may provide a lower
level of remuneration but which includes other benefits, especially
valuable for applicants who wish to bring their families to Macao.

An international selection committee will screen all applications and
review a short-list. The review will start on 31 March; late
applications may also be considered until the position is
filled. Only short-listed applicants will be notified of receipt of
application as well as of the subsequent outcome.

Applicants must send a detailed curriculum vitae, with names of at least
three referees, copies of diplomas, and one copy of each of up to 5 of
the most relevant publications to:
